Companies had not been allowed to add new capacity since May, as key regulators like the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stepped in to curb a construction spree that risked creating severe overcapacity despite rising demand from renewable-energy projects around the world, the sources...

Investment surge in Central Asia drives calls for expanded use of Chinese yuan

Expanding use of the Chinese yuan in fast-growing Central Asia, where China is a top investor, can reduce risks and costs for infrastructure firms, part of a broader trend that sees the currency gaining ground wherever commercial flows create demand for it, according to speakers on an investment panel in Hong Kong on Thursday. Smoother access to the yuan would lower risks inherent in currency exchanges, particularly when the more internationalised US dollar is trending strong, and bring down the...

Elevated crack spreads and crude oil prices contribute to higher prices at the pump

What are crack spreads and why are they elevated? Crack spreads are indicators of the profitability of refining crude oil into petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel. One common crack spread is calculated by subtracting the spot market price of a gallon of crude oil from the wholesale price of a gallon of refined product. Since May, the gasoline crack spread in New York Harbor has averaged about $1 per gallon (gal) higher than in 2025, when the crack spread peaked around 60 cents/gal. Gasoline crack spreads are elevated primarily because of tight gasoline supplies globally.

Hard to shift, easy to reshape: central bank reserve demand and frictions

How far can central banks shrink their balance sheets? The answer sets the limits to quantitative tightening (QT), and depends critically on the demand for reserves and whether the drivers widely thought to have increased it over the past decade actually do so. We assess the impact of three such drivers: post-crisis liquidity regulation, monetization frictions, and fragmented interbank markets.

High public debt in the Americas: non-linear implications for risk premia and inflation expectations

Public debt has reached multi-decade highs in the Americas. Additionally, public interest costs have generally increased over the past decade. High public debt and interest costs increase the sensitivity of risk premia to fiscal deficits – regardless of the exchange rate regime – and amplify the sensitivity of short-term inflation expectations to fluctuations in risk premia. Our analysis underscores the relevance of disciplined fiscal policies, which assume heightened significance in the context of current debt dynamics. On the monetary side, safeguarding central bank independence is crucial for ensuring macroeconomic stability.

Africa's public debt amid global headwinds: balancing resilience and vulnerabilities

The conflict in the Middle East has raised energy and fertiliser prices, weakened growth and intensified fiscal pressures across Africa at a time when public debt and debt service burdens remain elevated. The shift towards domestic currency debt has reduced exchange rate risk for issuers and preserved market access, but higher interest rates and shorter maturities have increased debt service costs and rollover risks. A heavy reliance on banks and central banks for government financing can reinforce the sovereign-bank nexus, crowd out private credit and threaten financial stability. Developing deeper markets and a more diversified investor base are essential to address these challenges.

Energy shocks and inflation: challenges for monetary policy

The recent energy shock ranks among the most significant since the 1990s. Structural factors and initial conditions influence how energy shocks propagate into inflation – directly and through second-round effects. The appropriate monetary policy reaction depends on the persistence of the inflationary pressures as well as the magnitude of the growth impact, and it differs across economies. Uncertainty about these effects further complicates the policy challenge.
